I am a Japanese fan of SG/PS/AG. I have been listening their music for these 30 years ( since I was twelve ). Today, I have one question concerning the Paul Simon Songbook. It was often said elsewhere that the album was recoreded in May, 1965 in UK and that soon after the release Paul himself took it back and hence it was sold only a short periond of time, UK. But, that same album was sold in Japan in 1969. And when Paul first came to Japan to give a concert ( which I actually saw in Osaka, Japan ), he learned that it WAS still circulated in Japan. Soon after that, the Japan's version of the Songbook had disappered from stores nation-wide. I heard from a Japanese fan of SG that there are 3 songs that Paul dislikes ( and one of which is " The side of a Hill " ) in that album and this is why it was collected. If you know the truth behind the cancellation of the Songbook album, would you please let me know ? Sincerely yours, Matz Izutani [回答] Email from Paul Zollo: Subject: Re: The Paul Simon Songbook Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 13:14:50 -0700 From: "Zollo." To: Matazo Izutani Hello Matz-- Nice to hear from you -- always nice to be in touch with friends of Simon/Garfunkel. I'm glad their music means as much to you in your life as it does to me. Where in Japan do you live? Simon recorded that solo Paul Simon Songbook in the UK, unaware that recordings made with Garfunkel in the States were still alive. They had put out the Wednesday Morning album here and it kind of stiffed --didn't go anywhere at all -- Paul moved to England, Artie went back to school. Then , with a DJs overdubs, "Sound Of Silence" became a hit -- and Paul came back to American and S&G recorded their own version of that song and a new album. Because of their success as a duo, it made no sense to release a solo-Simon album here in the States -- especially as many of the songs he did on it were ones he later did with Garfunkel. As far as Paul not liking some of the songs, I can't say for sure, except that I know he generally dislikes most of those songs from that time. "Too young," he would say. "That's like a song before I was myself,' and other comments along those lines. "Side Of A Hill" was used in the "Canticle" section of Scarborough Fair" -- Garfunkel's idea. Now that Songbook album is a collector's item and quite fun to listen to. It took me many years to attain it -- i have it only on tape -- but I do love hearing it, and it makes one wonder what Simon's career might have been like without Garfunkel. I hope that answers your question. What are your favorite songs by Simon? Is he very famous in Japan? Best wishes, PAUL ZOLLO |
